The OWL-Space Guide

Gradebook Tool

The Gradebook Tool allows you to track the scores of individual students, the class average for assignments, and the scores and averages for the course grade.

The Overview tab shows a table of every assignment and test from the Assignments and Tests & Quizzes tools, the due dates, whether the scores have been released to students, the average score among all graded assignments, and the maximum possible points on each assignment. Clicking on the name of an assignment or test opens a page showing the details for that assignment or test.

In this view you can see each student, their current grade, and the comments on the assignment. By clicking on the Log icon you can see the grading history for the assignment, who assigned what grade and when. You can change the grade by editing it, and also change the comments by clicking the Edit Comments button and then editing the comments. Any changes need to be saved by pressing the Save button at the bottom of the page.

You can view only a specific section by choosing it from the selection box. You can search for a student by entering all or part of their name in the Student Name box and pressing Find. To return to the previous view, press the Clear button.

At the top of the single assignment view are three buttons. You can move back and forward through all your assignments by using the Previous and Next buttons, and return to the list of all assignments by pressing Return to Overview.

By clicking on Edit Assignment, you can change the title of the assignment, the total point value, and the due date. You can also choose whether or not to include the assignment in the overall course grade, and whether or not to make the assignment and grade visible to students.

In the Overview tab, clicking on Change grade options will allow you to decide whether or not to release any scores to students, whether to let students see their overall course grade, and the type of grade for the overall course grade as well as set the percentage values for each letter grade (or the pass/fail boundary).

The Roster tab shows a table of all students in the class with their grade for each assignment and their cumulative grade for the course. You can choose to view only a specific section by choosing the section from the View selection box. You can search for a specific student by entering all or part of their name in the Student Name box and pressing the Find button. To return from this filtered view to the view of all students, press Clear. You are also able to export this information into a spreadsheet file for download to your computer, in either MS Excel or CSV (comma-separated list) format. To do so, click on one of the two Export buttons at the bottom of the page.

The Add Assignment tab allows you to enter more assignments into the Gradebook. You can set the title, point value, due date, inclusion in course grade, and release options for the assignment when you add it. Note that this does not create an assignment in the Assignments tool for students to complete via OWL-Space, although you can create one in the Assignments tool later and associate it with this entry in the Gradebook. Creating an assignment in the Gradebook also does not send out an announcement to students, allow automatic release on a future date, or any of the other options from the Assignments tool. Also note that when creating assignments in the Assignments tool, you can choose to automatically add them to the Gradebook at that time (or not).

The Grade Options tab takes you to the same page as the Change grade options link on the Overview tab.

The Upload/Import tab allows you to upload spreadsheets in CSV format from your computer to your OWL-Space site, and then add data from those spreadsheets to your Gradebook tool.
