Section Info Tool

The Section Info tool allows you to manage the lab, lecture, discussion, etc. sections for your course. You can create sections, assign TAs and students to them, and allow students to sign up for sections through your OWL-Space site if desired.

The Section Info tool has four tabs: Overview, Add Sections, Student Memberships, and Options. Overview is the main page of the tool. It shows a table listing each section in your course, its assigned TA, meeting place and time, maximum size, and number of spaces still available. You can Edit a section by clicking on the Edit link below the section name, Assign TAs by clicking on the link of the same name, or Assign Students by clicking on the Assign Students link. You can delete a section altogether by checking the box in the Remove column for that section, and pressing the Remove Sections button at the bottom of the page.

Add Sections allows you to add 1 to 10 sections of a single type at once. Select the number of sections to add in the first selection box, and the type of sections to add in the second selection box. You will then be able to enter the details for each section. You can give the section a name in the Title box (which defaults to Lab1, Lab2, etc.), check the box next to each day that the section meets, enter the start and end times of the section (select AM or PM from the radio buttons), enter the maximum size of the section, and enter the meeting place. It is not possible to enter different times or locations for each day the section meets. Press the Add Sections button when you are done.

The Student Memberships tab shows a list of all students and what section(s) they are in. You can sort the list by clicking on the headings, or search for a student by entering their name or ID in the text box and pressing the Find button. Press Clear to cancel your search and return to the list of all students. You can click on a student's name to edit which sections that student is assigned to.

In the Options tab, you have a choice of allowing sections to be automatically created and managed using data from the official registration system, or you can choose to manage sections yourself. If you take the manual option, there are two checkbox choices you can make to further customize how your course sections are managed. You can place a check in the first box if you want to allow students to sign up for sections through OWL-Space (rather than or in addition to you assigning them). You can check the second box if you want students to be able to switch from their assigned or chosen section to a different one (assuming there are spaces available).

When you Edit a section, you will be able to change all the details you entered when you created the section, except for the section type (lab, discussion, etc.).

When you Assign TAs, you will see a box with a list of TAs not assigned to the section on the left, and a box with a list of TAs assigned to the section on the right. You can move a TA from one box to the other by selecting their name in the box and then pressing one of the arrow buttons. You can move all TAs in one box to the other box by pressing one of the double-arrow Move All buttons. When done, press the Assign TAs button at the bottom.

When you Assign Students, you will see the same view as when assigning TAs. The left hand box shows a group of students that can be chosen from the selection box above it. You can choose to see all students who are not yet assigned to a section of this type, or you can see students from one of the other sections of this type. Moving students between the boxes works the same way as the Assign TAs interface. Press the Assign students button when you are finished.
