OWL-Space

The OWL-Space Guide

Syllabus Tool

The OWL-Space Syllabus tool allows you to create and store your course syllabus online, so students always have access to it on OWL-Space. If you already have a syllabus file or webpage somewhere online, you can also set the Syllabus tool to link to that resource.

The Syllabus tool main page shows the contents of your syllabus, with a Create/Edit tab at the top for revising those contents. Next to the Create/Edit tab is a printer icon. Click on the printer icon to open a printable copy of the syllabus.

The Create/Edit tab allows you to revise the contents of your syllabus. At the top of the Create/Edit page are three tabs: Add, Redirect, and Preview. Below them is a table of all of the items in your syllabus. You can change the order of the items in your syllabus by clicking on the up and down arrows to move items up and down. You can remove an item by checking the remove box on the right side and pressing the Update button at the bottom. Clicking on the name of any syllabus item opens a page that allows you to edit the item, just as described for the Add tab below.

The Add tab allows you to add a new item to your syllabus. An item consists of a title and a content section. Enter the title in the Title box, and then create your content in the Content box. The Content box uses the OWL-Space text editor interface, so you can include images, color text, links, and more. Below the content box, you have a choice to set this syllabus item as publicly viewable or only visible to members. Any items set to public can be seen by non-members. You can also choose to attach one or more files to this syllabus item, and decide whether to send email to users to let them know about the new syllabus content (see the Announcements tool for more information about the notification settings).

When you are done, you can preview your syllabus item, save it as a draft for later revision, or post it to your syllabus.

The Redirect tab allows you to set your syllabus tool to show another webpage or document instead of the content created in the Syllabus tool. If you have created syllabus items in the tool, they will be hidden while the redirection is in place. If you later remove the redirect, the created content will be visible again. The Redirect tab has one text box, labeled URL. Enter the URL of the website or resource you wish to display in the Syllabus tool, and then press the Save button. To remove the redirection, enter the Redirect tab, clear the URL box, and press Save.

The Preview tab will return you to the main Syllabus tool page, showing you what the student view of the syllabus looks like (except that students do not have a Create/Edit tab).
